It all started when…
As a young girl growing up in Philadelphia, PA, I realized I loved to tell stories and was more comfortable writing than speaking. From short stories to poetry, and writing letters to my family and friends who lived afar, writing was home. Unfortunately, my guidance counselor advised me to seek a more lucrative career because “There’s no real money in writing.” Therefore, I did not follow my heart until many, many years later. Until then, I worked as a defense contractor for several years, then directly for the Department of Defense.
Fast forward to 2012…
Divorce would force me to return to the United States and re-evaluate my life and career. Was it too late to become a writer? What type of writing did I want to create? How would I even get started? Thanks to FancyHands I was able to take on simple writing tasks and worked my way up to more complex assignments that included writing blog articles. In 2013, I stumbled across Elance (now Upwork) where I was able to take on more of a variety of writing assignments and that’s how I found my first long-term freelance writing gig.
And now…
After lots of hard work, I’m living my dream as a Black blogger and journalist. My clients come from so many different industries, allowing me to learn about topics I never even knew I would be interested in but find fascinating! The cherry on top is that I also have my own video game and tech blog where I write about the things that are near and dear to my heart as a Blerd woman navigating gaming and tech spaces.
And soon, I’ll be writing about another of my great loves, international travel.
Being an introverted Black American blogger, I have to do my best to put myself out there.
